Hetian Nephrite is mined in the high altitude Kunlun Mountains (4500 m) in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region of north-western China, near the Mongolian and Russian boarder. Chinese Hetian nephrite is nearing depletion due to over mining, and as such it has become very valuable. In ancient times, one could follow the rivers upstream and find the valuable 'river jade' along the banks. However, it is all but gone without climbing to very high altitudes. The river jade is also referred to as jade pebbles or boulders. Hetian is consider to be 'hard jade' with a hardness of 6.5 on the moe scale (harder than steel). |
